  • cabin class conflict

HONG KONG SAR, CHINA | HKG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT รจ

fourteen hours in the air later and we’re here in hong kong, awaiting our connection to singapore.  thankfully, the SFO-HKG leg was relatively empty, and i spent a good three hours or so in the economy class version of a first class “lie flat” seat–that is, sprawled across five empty seats with the armrests drawn up.  it was great, and thanks to my premier status on united, we were seated in economy plus with 3-5 more inches of legroom.

but i have a question for you.

suppose you sit in economy plus, which you’ve “earned” either by turning elite with united’s mileage plus program or by paying for it (the additional cost is in the range of 10-50% of the base economy fare; for this flight i heard a quote of at least $100).  now, the flight takes off and you’re in the air for about an hour, and you see a gentleman creep from economy class behind you into an economy plus seat ahead of you.  what do you do?

    (1) leave it be, it’s really not a big deal.
    (2) leave it be but think it unfair and be totally super passive aggressive about it.
    (3) confront him directly and be nice about it.
    (4) confront him directly and be mean about it.
    (5) report his ass and snicker as he gets escorted back to economy class.

i’m curious what you choose, and i’ll tell you what i did in next post.  ok, boarding for singapore!

  • 1. I’d probably do the same thing if I were that man.

  • Have someone moon him. That’ll do the trick!

  • I’d do the first option. It’s really not worth my time.

  • Because economy class is still economy, and the plane was empty, I would probably pick #1. It’s kind of a sham, to be fair. It’s like northwest charging more for aisle and window seats.

  • Hallo~! You must be so excited lor!!! 1) Because it’s an empty seat anyways. It was a highly perishable item (the seat) and the airline or yourself can really do anything about it. Ask the attendant if there are any empty seats for a Premium Class member such as yourself ^_^. Just think to yourself that you’re doing the right thing and that he’s doing the wrong thing. Bad karma will greet him in the eye later. Just don’t let something like that bother you on a flight. You already have to ordeal with the discomfort and the long hours in flying, no need to amount more stress and anguish over something that you really shouldn’t care about. No one is in harm’s way. Did you see if there were any business seats open? Hahaha. Are you flying SIA??? I certainly hope so because no other airline can compare from my experience. Yah lor, don’t worry about it lah~! Hope you have a great time in SGP. Eat some yummy Chili Crab and White Pepper Crab at “No Signboard” Seafood Restaurant by the Esplanade!!!!

  • i’d do 1.  it’s really no biggie.

the only time i will say something is when (1) someone constantly PULLS my chair back when they are trying to get up from their seat and does the same when they come back; (2) when they suddenly lean their chair back (as opposed to slowly doing so); or (3) not turning off their electronic devices when the airplane doors have been closed and we are leaving the gate.
